Tell us about your ideas, personal stories, and data points on how we can keep the Gulf Branch Nature Center open. The Civic Association will be speaking in front of the County Board on Tuesday, March 24th and we want to be sure to capture all of your thoughts. Thanks!

I read with sadness about the proposed plans to close Gulf Branch Nature Center. My first experience with the Nature Center was in the 1970’s when my beloved Grandmother used to take me there quite often. When I had kids, we participated in their Children’s Programs (whenever we could get in since they were so popular!) and our playgroup which consisted of families in DC, MD and Va met there often since the kids enjoyed it so much.
I hope the Board will re-consider.

Ruth,
We moved to Chesterbrook Rd. before Gulf Branch was open. I THINK right after it opened, an employee lived there. I think the downstairs was an apt and the upstairs was the nature center. Whether or not I am correct, it might be a good idea to explore that arrangement. Someone would be looking after the place and it would help with the funding.
I would like to see that idea explored, as well as joining with a non-profit such as the Nature Conservancy.
My husband and I have been upset to see the word “shame” being used with reference to the County Board. They are trying to do their job, with respect to all the taxpayers and they have nothing to be ashamed of. There is nothing to be gained and much to be lost in dealing in such negativity.
Good luck to you! Do you know where Gulf Branch is on the agenda? And could you give an approximate time for that item?
Thanks, Kay Bean
